Natural Features & Environment

The Dabbabia Protected Area near Luxor is globally renowned for its exceptional geological and environmental features. The site exposes a continuous marine sedimentary sequence from the Paleocene–Eocene transition, recording one of the most significant climate change events in Earth’s history — the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM).
Distinct rock formations such as the Dakhla Shale, Tarawan Chalk, and Esna Shale preserve invaluable evidence of ancient oceans, atmospheric conditions, and marine ecosystems that existed over 55 million years ago. Rich assemblages of microfossils and minerals help scientists reconstruct how life and climate evolved during this critical period.
