Nestled in the Eastern Desert near Luxor, Dabbabia Protected Area stands as a globally acclaimed geological landmark — the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the Paleocene–Eocene boundary. Officially designated as a protected area No. (27) in 2007, Dabbabia represents a natural archive of Earth’s history, offering scientists and visitors a rare glimpse into the dynamic transitions that shaped our planet over 55 million years ago.

At Dabbabia, layers of marine sedimentary rocks — including the Esna Shale, Dakhla Shale, and Tarawan Chalk formations — preserve an uninterrupted geological record rich in microfossils and climate indicators. These strata provide crucial evidence for understanding ancient global warming events, mass extinctions, and the evolution of marine ecosystems during the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM).
